Workplace Support

Are you a manager with an employee that has a disability and seems to be struggling to do their job effectively? You know they're valuable to your business but don't know what to do.

In the first instance, try to identify the real problem.

Identifying a problem sounds easy but there are so many things that may prevent the root of the problem becoming apparent.

It can be advantageous to bring in a person that can mediate. This can take the strain off both parties.

Whatever way you choose, you must:

1. Sit with the person and assure them you want to help (If this is a problem then ask someone you both trust to do it for you).

2. Set short term aims and goals along with an initial timescale for everyone to work to - this can be reassessed when you get all of the facts together. This is a very important step as it gives your employee a feeling of trust that something will be done to help and as a manager, it gives you better control of the situation.

3. Ask the individual to write down all of the problems they have to try to overcome on a daily basis. You could work with them, if it is easier and note your observations too.

4. Understand the resources needed. Either get in help to then look at the appropriate adjustments. These could include training, assistive tools and equipment, re-adjustment of duties, a temporary mentor or even confidence building.

5. Look at who needs to be involved to ensure these adaptations happen. You might need to involve your HR dept, a mediator or some other professional for advice on equipment or training.

6. Stick to your timescales. If they need to change explain why and keep the employee informed.

As I've said earlier, sometimes it's best to bring in a mediator or someone that can run with the whole process and ensure there are no delays etc. The sooner the employee is helped the sooner they wil be effective again. At this point everyone is happy.
